Nena set up a little mini salon in A‘s room and proceeded to chat and giggle while she cut her hair.
My 14-year-old daughter, A, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia last week. She has long beautiful curly hair. After her central line was placed, it was hard to keep the hair out of her central line area as well as to shower with it. We asked our social worker for help in getting a haircut for her. There is no service set up to give kids haircuts on the oncology/transplant unit. I was having a hard time finding a hairdresser who could come with the visitor restrictions and not being from SLC. The child life specialist went and asked around if anyone knew of someone who could cut A’s hair. Nena, one of the nurses, volunteered to come and cut her hair. She set up a little mini salon in A‘s room and proceeded to chat and giggle while she cut her hair. It was one of the most compassionate and loving things I’ve seen. My daughter was truly happy with her haircut, and it will help A transition to losing her hair completely. To me this is what nursing is all about, putting the needs of the patient first and foremost in the care and making the patient and family feel loved and supported. Thank you, Nena, from the bottom of this momma's heart!
