Nevin has provided excellent care for our most vulnerable populations, including survivors of sexual assault and trafficking, unhoused youths, and youths living in poverty, and connected them to vital resources.
Today, we had a patient in our clinic who was suffering from severe nausea. Once he was checked in and placed into an exam room with his parent, he vomited all over his shoes, clothes, the exam table, and the floor. Nevin found some clothes for the child and helped him get cleaned up. He asked the child if he was okay with getting his shoes cleaned and the child consented. He then took the child's shoes to our utility room and washed and scrubbed them by hand with soap and scalding water. The child's mother was so appreciative. Although this child was not assigned to Nevin's clinical care team (the child was assigned to me), he continued to check on the family throughout their visit. He kept them as comfortable as possible until their visit ended. Nevin also assisted me with sanitizing all of the equipment and cleaning the room once the family departed.
This is one of many examples of how Nevin goes above and beyond. Nevin is a phenomenal nurse who has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of children and families during his many years with Children's Goldberg Center, first as an LPN II and now as an RN II. I've had the joy of working alongside him, and he continues to be a major asset to the nursing team and staff overall.
Nevin has provided clinical nursing services at multiple Children's sites throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. It is well known that many of our families East of the river live in healthcare deserts with limited access to vital services. During a rotation on the Children's Mobile health van, he accompanied a care team to a low-resource community. An innocent teenager had been struck by a stray bullet, severely injured, and in desperate need of support. Utilizing his PALS and CPN knowledge and training, Nevin exited the van and provided care as a first responder until the ambulance arrived. Had he not acted, the child may have died.
Nevin has provided excellent care for our most vulnerable populations, including survivors of sexual assault and trafficking, unhoused youths, and youths living in poverty, and connected them to vital resources. The community health/ambulatory setting is often where the majority of our pediatric patients first encounter the CNH health system. Our colleagues who serve in this specialty deserve recognition.
Nevin embodies the values and missions of this organization and has continuously demonstrated high moral character and compassion. Nevin is also an avid reader and lifelong learner, both professionally and personally. He often serves as a resource nurse for newly hired nurses, agency nurses, and medical residents. I separated from Children's National years ago and returned this year as a temporary contractor. He has been vital in supporting me with nursing policy, procedures, and helping me acclimate to the clinic.
I believe Nevin is more than deserving of this recognition. Not only is he an excellent individual, but he is also a stellar representation of Goldberg Community Pediatrics as a whole. While Children's is renowned for its inpatient care, our outpatient services are just as impactful and necessary to sustain and support our current and future generations of children.
It is my honor and privilege to recommend my colleague and friend for this prestigious award.
