Nick always listened to and truly heard my concerns.
It is difficult to find the words to express the gratitude my family and I hold for the care Nick provided my son during his time at Rhode Island Hospital. During a time when Covid restricted the hours we were able to visit the hospital I was beyond comforted by the fact that Nick was there day in and day out providing what I feel is the best care a mother could ask for in my absence. The ICU can be a scary place for a visitor and for a patient. Nick’s support was what I needed to walk through the ICU doors every day to an unresponsive loved one along with every device and sound and healthcare provider that came with the visit. This nurse embodies every one of your CARE principles.
Compassion – Nick always listened to and truly heard my concerns. For example, I was concerned that my son’s contact lenses had been in since the time he was admitted. Although this probably was not a priority in the whole scheme of things. Nick listened to my concern and by the time I was able to visit later in the day it had been taken care of. A small gesture but the first person to acknowledge and validate my request.
Accountable – As I mentioned, visiting hours were tough but eased by the fact that Nick always made time for my morning call and had the forethought to update me on the things I expressed as most important to me. If he was unavailable when I called, he ALWAYS called me back as soon as he could.
Respect – Though my son never woke up, Nick always respected him as a person. He would speak to him directly to tell him what he was going to do before doing it. Constantly engaged with him and looked for the smallest signs of progress. Explained EVERYTHING to me as many times as I needed it to understand. I so appreciated seeing these interactions as I knew my son was never alone when Nick was on.
Excellence – When Nick learned my son loved music he suggested I bring music in for him to listen to. I brought some in and he learned how to use my outdated technology and would play it for him when I wasn’t there. This proves to me Nick tries to see the person behind the patient and heal on many levels. I will be forever grateful for his presence. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!
