Yesterday, our mother passed away peacefully surrounded by her family overlooking the lake in front of her home.
For some background, Mom arrived at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania via the Emergency Room in HUP from a community hospital. She was critically ill and occupied seven or eight different rooms during the duration of her stay, three in ICU within your facility. These visits were broken up after spending a day or two in a local rehab or ICU only to return to fight her next battle.
We prayed for a different outcome, but it was not to be.
I would like to recognize Nicholas Mengucci BSN, RN from the 12th floor of the Silverstein building for his kindness and compassion during mom's final days in the hospital. Nick was responsible for my mother's care and was professional, helpful, approachable, and most of all truly compassionate. Mom's stay was long term and we were there every day providing support and encouraging her to follow the doctor's advice. As you can imagine we encountered many people including those who were cleaning the rooms, food service, secretaries, ambassadors, social workers, nurses, and doctors. All were professional, kind and talented, so to call Nick for his contribution is no small achievement.
Nick's commitment included spending extra time with Mom as her communications skills were starting to become more difficult. As the caregiver, it was a great relief that I was able to let my dad stay by my mom's bedside for several days. Nick provided a bed in the room with pillows and blankets, as well as coffee and small snacks to keep his sugar balanced. Nick's compassion for my mom and dad allowed me to take a few worry-free moments away from the constant needs of my aging parents. Nick also provided updates to me at a time when my mom's condition was in a wait and see period. Nick is a stellar representative of the nursing staff at Penn Medicine and a true DAISY Nurse.

I have been employed in the hospital setting for forty years and have never met a more dedicated, professional nurse. After surgery, I was taken to my room where Nick was assigned as my nurse. From the time I entered my room until discharge, he was always there to assist me in my care. It was a difficult time for me and my family, but the pain and fears were diminished by his tremendous dedication to his patients, duty, and HUP. I will always remember Nick and how he took away my fears and showed me hope. Nick is a professional whom his peers should emulate. HUP should be very proud to have him work there.
