I was originally admitted for my hospital stay on my birthday. It was a 55th birthday to remember! I had been having a severe UC flare that left me bedridden for 2 weeks. The results of a colonoscopy showed an extremely diseased and weakened colon. The staff that took care of me were just wonderful, but Nick Sablich stood out.
From the moment Nick entered my room with his warm smile, I just felt loved. Like someone who really cares and "gets it." He explained in full detail all the steps of care as he performed them throughout the day and covered a daily itinerary with me, so I knew what to expect. He answered every question, from meds to procedures, to ostomy questions and output to pain—really, he never was without the information I was looking for.
Nick was equally so reassuring about what I was going through in regard to pain, recovery, what to expect with eating, talked about "good days" and days I might feel low energy and not to let that fluctuation worry me.
Nick was going to help me with my bag change when my husband arrived. I was a bit anxious about the bag change, but Nick made it so easy. He encouraged me to shower without the new bag on—which I am glad I did as I felt like a new and fresh person. Nick was so good at reassuring me and after we went through the process he said, "Well you did a great job, and considering everything, I know you are going to do just fine." How great to hear someone have confidence in me.
On the day of discharge, Nick wheeled me out to the car and told me he knew I would do just fine—he had given me all the tools I needed, and he was right. I will never forget his care, his help, his knowledge, and his most amazing bedside manner. He is truly a shining star in your organization.
