Nick stayed to visit with the patient for about 45 minutes. He was encouraging, saying he needed to eat to get his strength back so he could return home.
When my husband was admitted, Nick was his nurse. He was very pleasant, highly efficient, and really wanted to help. My husband couldn't lay down in the bed, so Nick scoured the floor to find the only recliner available. He was getting him settled in when the patient next to him needed help. He was now handling both patients' needs and was very happy to help. The next day, I returned and hadn't seen any visitors for the other patient. I later learned his family lived in another state. I was there maybe an hour when I saw Nick walk in with a bag of food. He went to see the patient and then, I heard the patient crying because he was so surprised and thankful to Nick for his act of kindness. He stayed to visit with the patient for about 45 minutes. He was encouraging, saying he needed to eat to get his strength back so he could return home. He told the patient not to give up that there are many people who care about him. He did this on his own time with his own money. I must say this touched my heart and a tear ran down my cheek. Anybody can be taught to be a good nurse but the humanity and compassion I witnessed cannot be taught. It has to come from the heart. This is what makes Nick Starll a Great Nurse!
