Her patients and their parents feel seen, heard, and valued
Nichole Gingrich began her career as a nurse in the Pediatric Unit. From the first day Nichole has been a kind, compassionate and dedicated nurse we continue to witness and expect great things from her.
She has been acknowledged for her kindness, caring, and compassion by many patients and their families. Recently the mother of a teenage patient wrote a DAISY story about Nichole’s care of her teenage daughter. The patient was overwhelmed with the new diagnosis of a Hem/Onc nature and the impacts the treatment would have upon her, her education, her appearance, etc. Nicole was able to facilitate discussions in terms both the patient and her parents could understand and helped ease some of the burdens that this type of disease process has upon families and coping.
Nicole’s kindness, compassion, and ability to communicate in an age-appropriate manner are not limited to adolescents, however.
Most recently, she is serving as the primary nurse for a 6-year-old boy. This young man has had a very challenging course, experiencing multiple complications and setbacks since his oncology diagnosis. His parents, for their coping, require a great deal of detailed information at a high academic level of language, with a focus on precision and detail and without the use of ‘layman’ terms.
A third example is when Nichole cared for the child of a pediatric nurse colleague. This mom wrote “My son was admitted for a night waiting to get his inguinal hernia repaired and I have to say I was a mess! It is so much worse when it's your kid. The team on Davis 7 took such good care of us. I was so grateful for them. Especially Nichole Gingrich on days- I was at my breaking point and she was so calm, understanding, and helpful with communicating the plan with me. It puts things in perspective being on the other side, and I want to give kudos where they are due!”
Nichole’s ability to be perceptive to different needs in her patients and families, her ability to individualize her care activities, and facilitate communication in the way best received by those patients and their families make her an excellent nurse. Her patients and their parents feel seen, heard, and valued. She promotes excellent communication with other members of the care team. For these reasons and many others, I nominate Nichole for recognition for excellence in nursing and for making a difference in the well-being of the patients in her care.
