Nichole Peterson, RN
I am honored to recognize a remarkable stroke nurse who cared for my mother during her hospitalization in Boise.
In one of the most frightening moments our family has ever faced, Nichole brought a level of skill, urgency, and compassion that we will never forget.
From the moment she entered the room, she set the tone...calm, focused, and completely present. Stroke care is measured in seconds, and it was clear she understood the gravity of that. She moved quickly and confidently, anticipating needs, coordinating care, and ensuring that nothing was missed.
But what stood out just as much as her clinical excellence was how she cared for my mom as a person. She spoke to her with reassurance and dignity, even when things were uncertain. She took time to explain what was happening in a way that reduced fear for both my mother and our family.
In a situation where everything felt out of control, she created a sense of safety and trust. That is not something you can teach: it is who she is.
She also went above and beyond in advocating for our family. She made sure my brother and I were able to speak directly with the neurosurgeon, ensuring we understood what was happening and had the opportunity to ask questions. That level of coordination and advocacy meant everything to us.
In a moment where we felt overwhelmed and powerless, she made us feel included, informed, and supported.
What makes her truly extraordinary is the way she balances precision with humanity. She is clearly highly skilled, but she never lets the urgency of the situation override compassion. She made us feel like my mom mattered-not just as a patient, but as a person whose life, independence, and future were worth fighting for.
Because of her, we were able to breathe a little easier in an otherwise overwhelming moment. Because of her, we felt confident that my mom was in the best possible hands. And because of her, we felt cared for and safe during a time that could have easily felt frightening and uncertain.
We experienced not just excellent care-but deeply meaningful care.
Nurses like her are the heart of healthcare. She represents everything the DAISY Award stands for: clinical excellence, extraordinary compassion, and a profound impact on patients and families.
