Nichole, as our nurse, reminded us of the power of connection, the importance of empathy, and the value of patient-centered care.
Nichole was my wife's nurse for most of our first day on the Labor and Delivery service. As first-time parents, we were worried, tense, and anxious when we first met Nichole. Her presence, enthusiasm, warmth, and excellent bedside manner immediately lightened the mood. She consistently explained everything that was happening throughout her time with us, what she was doing each time she came into our room, and how she could best ease our worries. Her communication was excellent and her patience was immensely appreciated.
In one particular instance, my wife was undergoing an uncomfortable examination and Nichole remained at her bedside, held her hand, and reassured her, saying, "I am here for you, and you are safe." Such an exemplary demonstration of bedside compassion made us feel cared for and enhanced our trust in the process.
Further, Nichole also had a nursing student with her whom she mentored with patience, deliberation, and thoughtfulness. The student, who was excellent as well and under Nichole's mentorship, further enhanced the care we received with attentiveness, curiosity, and compassion.
As physicians, my wife and I understand how difficult it can be to navigate our fast-paced healthcare system, and how easy it is to forget the human side of medicine. Nichole, as our nurse, reminded us of the power of connection, the importance of empathy, and the value of patient-centered care. While our stay at JHH was highlighted by the exceptional care of the nursing, physician, and support staff at all levels – Nichole, in particular, exemplifies the very best and we believe she should be recognized for such dedication to the art of nursing.
