Nick's tender-hearted, understanding, affectionate way was comforting and helpful so that I did not have to focus on anything other than being present for my Mother and Father.
Words cannot not describe nor do justice for the unbelievable service that was provided to my family and me during one of the most challenging times of our lives. I arrived at the MICU at approximately 11:35 pm and was immediately greeted by a friendly, welcoming face. Understanding the extreme circumstances and being able to provide support and understanding immediately without saying anything is a true gift. Nick (Heyer) is that person. He selflessly provided empathy and compassion throughout the entire difficult circumstances that surrounded my mother, a wife of 58 years, during her last stage of life (a 4.5 hour event that spilled over into the next day). Nick was incredibly attentive to my elderly Father, understanding that as a man, my Father would listen to him and abide by his suggestions for his own well-being, while my Father remained bedside during the transition phase of my Mother.

Nurses such as Nick epitomize the value of “service” and “selfless service to others.” It takes a special person to be able to manage multiple patients in the MICU, while making family members feel like they are special and the top priority. Nick demonstrated this throughout the entire process for us. His tender-hearted, understanding, affectionate way was comforting and helpful so that I did not have to focus on anything other than being present for my Mother and Father. Nick ensured that my Mother was kept comfortable and, as the utmost professional, was able to express his condolences and usher us into the transition of saying goodbye without rushing us or pressuring us in any way.

Nick provided superior administration of care. Everything a nurse needs in order to be successful in their career, is embodied within him: caring, communication skills, empathy, attention to detail, stamina, the ability to roll with the comments, and a sense of humor that comes out during the difficult moments, commitment to patient advocacy and step-by-step explanation to the family members.

Without a doubt, Nick Heyer should be recognized for his outstanding contribution to the Nursing Field, St. Luke’s Hospital, the MICU, and his patients and their families.
