Nick was able to bring a pulse back to the man twice while I was there. He worked tirelessly and continuously on his patient until he was relieved by EMS.
At about 8:25 pm, I was driving home from work on Hwy 50 near the Prairie City exit in Folsom. I saw there was a vehicular accident ahead of me, and traffic was slowing down. I pulled to the side to see if there was anything I could help with. When I got close to the scene, I saw two men running to a vehicle that was obviously involved in a major collision. During this incident, I learned one of the men was a local EMT, and the other was an RN from Kaiser South Sacramento, Nick Williams.
Nick worked expertly with the EMT to help the driver of the vehicle. We extracted the unconscious driver from the vehicle, cutting him out of his seatbelt, and pulling him through the broken window. Nick began to administer aid immediately. Nick checked for a pulse with negative results, and the two men began CPR right there on the roadway. When everyone else was clear from the inside of the vehicle, I went back to Nick to help with the CPR. Nick was able to bring a pulse back to the man twice while I was there. Nick rendered emergency lifesaving CPR to that man for nearly 30 minutes. Eventually, Folsom PD and CHP came on the scene, and then Sac Metro FD arrived and took over.
I was impressed with Nick Williams’ dedication to saving this man’s life. It’s possible that at least 300 vehicles passed by us during that scene, and Nick was one of very few who stopped to help. UCDMC’s Dr. Rose once told me that some people are just programmed to run into chaos, because that’s where they know they are needed at that moment. Nick Williams was that man that night. His heroism and bravery on that scene was recognized enough by me that I made sure to learn his name before he left. There was no reason for him to be there other than his moral obligation of human decency. I wanted to be sure I shared his actions that night so others would learn of his great deed.
