I was very distressed about being in the hospital. I was not allowed out of bed and I had to wear diapers. This illness was a complete surprise and it was the 5th illness I had developed in 2.5 years. I was down about everything.
Nicky was on duty that evening and she came into my room and said "You seem very anxious. How about we go for a walk?" So, I put on my shoes and robe and took Nicky's arm and we walked down the hall and back and it was wonderful! We talked about our families and it made me feel so good just walking and talking.
I thought it was wonderful that she recognized my emotional distress even though I really wasn't showing it. And it was wonderful for her to take the time to help me accept a very difficult time. Nicky showed a special quality; compassion.
