My granddaughter gave birth to her first child, J, on Ward 23 in September. Nicky was the main nurse who took care of L. L is just 18 and struggled with the sad news that J was not to survive. He died the night before he was born. Nicky couldn't do enough for L and allowed us to stay with her throughout labour and delivery. She also let me stay the following night. Nicky brought baby clothes and a bowl so L could bathe and dress him and brought J back and forth as requested, even though the ward was busy. Nicky showed us so much love and compassion, I will be forever grateful for her kindness. L is now at the stage where she can speak openly and we think now the time is right to remember Nurse Nicky Read.
