After spending two months in the hospital with six months of frequent hospitalization thereafter, I have come to know the Oncology nurses quite well, in fact, as family. However, one nurse caught my eye quickly, Nicola Stewart. Initially, it was her beautiful English accent and her cute little short haircut, but soon I noticed something much deeper.
I was fearful as I began my chemotherapy. Nicola carefully explained everything no matter how busy. She always made time for me and was incredibly calming. As time went on, I lit up each time she walked in the room. That calming effect would allow me to relax with the knowledge that everything was going to be okay. My husband stayed in the room during my stay and she had the same effect on him. He quickly noticed her attention to detail, such as, carefully monitoring my infusion, emptying my Foley and taking out the trash.
All of this took place as quietly as possible. By doing so, she earned the name of Nicola Bond! While noticing the values of the hospital, Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence, I feel that no one exudes those qualities as well as she does. She once wrote to me that I had been an inspiration to her and that I had elevated myself beyond somewhat of a hero status. My husband and I both agree that this title belongs to our nurse Nicola Stewart. Thank you, Nicola, for taking care of us and for instilling the faith and confidence in us that you frequently showed.
