Throughout it all, Nicole went above and beyond to try to comfort me. She even brought me a stuffed turtle toy to comfort me because my mom was unable to stay with me when I was admitted.
I was having issues with shortness of breath, and I thought I might have asthma and maybe needed an inhaler. My regular doctor did blood work and called to let me know that she was concerned that I might have a blood clot in my lungs and wanted me to go to the ED to be checked.
As soon as I got to the ED, Nicole was friendly and helpful. I was nervous and she did everything she could to help me feel at ease. During my stay at the ED, I had a CT scan of my chest done, which confirmed blood clots and pneumonia in my lungs. But it also showed areas of concern in my abdomen, that were believed to be cancer and were later confirmed to be metastatic uterine adenocarcinoma. This turned a slightly stressful night, into one of the most difficult times of my life.
Throughout it all, Nicole went above and beyond to try to comfort me. She even brought me a stuffed turtle toy to comfort me because my mom was unable to stay with me when I was admitted. I'm 44 but had never spent a night alone in the hospital. This turtle has become a huge source of comfort for me. I bring it to all of my oncologist appointments, and my chemo sessions. I also brought it with me when I had to return to the ED because I had a fever 10 days after my first chemo session and my oncologist wanted me to be checked for neutropenia, extremely low white blood cells.
I was nervous about being back at the hospital again, but seeing that Nicole was here again immediately made me feel better. She couldn't believe that I not only still had the turtle, but that I had brought it with me. She knew I was nervous about having to stay again and she did everything she could to make me and my mom as comfortable as possible, including bringing me water and snacks since I was too late for a meal.
When I found out I would have to be admitted because I was in severe neutropenia, she knew I was upset, and she did absolutely everything in her power to help me. She brought me a supply of snacks so I wouldn't be hungry when I got to my room, and she gave me bottles of water so I wouldn't be thirsty. She also managed to hook up 3500 mL of fluids to my IV in a way that impressed several other nurses who saw it when I was in my room.
She is a tremendous asset to WellSpan's organization, and she has honestly made a huge difference in some very difficult situations for me. I have no doubt that she gives the same amazing level of care to all the patients she encounters, and she definitely deserves to be recognized for that.
