Nicole had a patient one night who was in need of help and comfort. His wife of over 50 years had taken a turn and it was evident he was concerned. He lost his temper quickly and although we know it was a reaction to the circumstances, it still created a challenging situation. Nicole appreciated the situation for what it was and provided compassionate care not only to the patient, but her husband as well. She recognized he was struggling to accept the situation he was dealing with. Her greeting to the husband resulted in a back lash and items being tossed around the room. Nicole was patient with the husband and listened to him vent his frustration. Her supportive listening unveiled the deeper concerns and he confessed to Nicole, "I can't go home to that empty house that I have shared with this woman I have loved for the last 50 years."
Nicole responded by provided sleeping arrangements to allow him to remain at his wife's bedside. He was restless and was awake most of the night, so Nicole charted outside the door and talked with him all during her shift. They talked about how he met his wife, the couple's children, and how he got involved in the restaurant business. In the morning, Nicole said goodbye and he hugged her like his own family. It was great to see him smile and enjoy a moment of ease during a very difficult time.
After two nights with Nicole and her compassionate care, the husband felt ready to make a final decision regarding the goals of care. During a meeting with the team, he stated that his time and conversation with Nicole helped him to realize what a great life he had with his wife and how lucky he was to have shared his life with a woman he loved so much.
Nicole provided amazing care to this patient and her husband. She was instrumental in facilitating an outcome that allowed the goals of care to be understood and accepted by the husband to ensure the patient's final wishes were met.
Nicole is an amazing nurse who is deserving of the DAISY Award for the wonderful care she delivers to patients and families.
