In 2015 my mother fell ill to a stroke. She was still able to have a full range of motion to all her extremities however her speech and cognitive thoughts and short-term memory were affected. After her hospital stay at Kennedy, Nicole was assigned to her. I observed her with my mother and was impressed. She spoke and treated my mother as if she had no deficits. I took note of Nicole's nursing communications skills and I decided to take some of her skills and use them myself, as I am an LPN. One year later my mother broke her coccyx and Nicole was assigned to our case again. My mother who has a big deficit in short-term memory recognized her and said, "Oh I am so glad you are here to take care of me!" My mother turned to me and said, "She is the best nurse and you can go to work now, we will be okay." Nothing like knowing your mother (with short-term memory loss) actually remembers someone after seeing them a year ago. I feel that remembering her and remembering that my mother felt she could trust her speaks volumes.
