He told me with tears that he'd never had a healthcare worker dedicate such time, love and compassion toward him and the experience left him revitalized and with renewed joy.
Nicole Carl is an extraordinary Nurse. She has a remarkable capacity to recognize the humanity in other individuals and connect with patients during their most vulnerable moments. Nicole is devoted to creating the best possible experience for the patients and goes out of her way to meet their every need. As a night shift Nurse, Nicole has volunteered to orient and train the new hires, is frequently assigned the most difficult assignments in the ICU, functions as a Charge Nurse and spends time on unit Committees. I could write a dozen narratives about Nicole, but the one that resonates most strongly revolves around a 30yo man who underwent his 2nd open heart surgery in his young life. When I left him that night he was defeated and had lost hope that he would ever be able to resume a normal life. When I returned to work in the morning, he asked me to sit at his bedside and told me how Nicole has shown him reverence and deep respect during their 12 hours together that both left him in awe and tears. He described how Nicole spent hours with him listening to his fears and worries. She sat with him during the night while he tried to sleep and didn't want to be alone. She found a way to shower him with central lines, chest tubes, drains and pacing wires. He told me with tears that he'd never had a healthcare worker dedicate such time, love and compassion toward him and the experience left him revitalized and with renewed joy. This narrative is frequently shared with ICU staff regarding Nicole. Nicole is a wonderful nurse and human and I am often left inspired by her compassion and love for others.
