Nicole spoke with him at the bedside for over an hour.
Mr. M has been a patient on 3North for the last 17 days. He is very sick and suffers from multiple comorbidities. In addition to his illnesses, he also has developed a spinal injury that requires him to wear a hard brace when he is out of bed. He finds the brace uncomfortable and confining. He received hemodialysis in his room and besides the occasional test, he remains in the room at all times. The combination of medical conditions and a lack of support from family and friends has made Mr. M very depressed and angry. This has caused him to lash out at staff which made a difficult nurse-patient relationship during the hospital stay.
Nicole Fellhauer, our day ANM, spoke with him at the bedside for over an hour. He opened up about his struggle to cope with his sickness, his loneliness and how afraid he is. Nicole spent time at the bedside to develop a rapport with him.
Elyse started each shift with a positive attitude. This helped the patient become comfortable with Elyse. It was a beautiful day and Nicole and Elyse were able to get the patient into the recliner and were able to wheel him to the courtyard to enjoy the day and a change in scenery. During his time outside, Elyse and Nicole took turns to stay with the patient. This further build up the rapport between the three of them and the patient was able to further open up and confide in Nicole and Elyse. The patient was able to tolerate being outside for 30 minutes. During Mr. M’s hospital stay, he found out his pastor died. He was supposed to sing at the funeral but of course, since he was hospitalized could not attend. He sang the song he was supposed to sing at the funeral to Elyse and Nicole, and he began to cry. He was sad about his pastor’s death and not being able to attend but was so happy and grateful to be outside. He said it was an amazing gift that Nicole and Elyse were able to give him.
