Nicole made this child feel visible and as stated in the letter inspired the patient to live on.
Nicole has been a team member in BayCare for approximately 13 years and came to our department in 2019. Even though it is far from our area of expertise, here we are often challenged with providing care for high-risk behavioral health patients. We have seen an increase in this population entering our hospital over the past two years, as well as an expansion in age range of these patients. As we have seen this rise, Nicole has stepped up and voluntarily verbalized a desire to work closely with this patient population. Caring for this population of patients requires empathy, patience, creativity, respect, and demonstration of the ability to remain calm when a patient escalates. Many of these patients remain with us in the department for several hours and even days due to challenges our community faces with resources and bed availability. It is imperative that we monitor this patient population closely for change in physical and mental status and that we always treat them with dignity and respect. Nicole embodies the BayCare values with all her patients but goes the extra mile specifically with this population. I think that the letter and the drawing that I have attached (in the nomination but not in this Survey), written and created by a 15-year-old patient, while under her care, is a testament as to why she is deserving of a DAISY Award. Nicole made this child feel visible and as stated in the letter inspired the patient to live on.
