One night, while working in the emergency department, Nicole encountered an elderly gentleman with dementia. The patient was brought to the emergency department by EMS after being found by police as he was driving around town. Sensing the patient was scared and overwhelmed, Nicole pulled up a chair and sat with him until his family arrived. Nicole’s kind, engaging, and empathetic attitude quickly put the patient at ease. By the end of his stay, they were talking and laughing like old friends. The world needs more nurses like Nicole who care for not only the patient’s medical needs but also their social and emotional needs
