April 2026 Honoree
Nicole Rungren, BSN, RN, CNOR
Nicole truly exemplified extraordinary nursing practice and advocacy during a critical situation in the operating room. During an OR case, the surgeon requested that a fluid specimen be sent to the lab; however, the team was unable to connect the specimen container in time before the fluid was suctioned into the closed Neptune system. Recognizing the importance of the specimen for the patient’s diagnosis and plan of care, the nurse in the room immediately sought out Nicole for assistance.
Nicole sprang into action without hesitation. She promptly communicated with the surgeon, ensuring transparency by explaining that the specimen was safely contained within the closed suction system. Nicole then took full ownership of resolving the issue: she contacted the Neptune representative to determine if the machine could be opened, coordinated directly with the laboratory to keep them informed, and communicated clearly with the charge nurse.
To protect the integrity of the specimen, Nicole ensured the machine was clearly labeled and preserved until the representative arrived. She remained involved throughout the entire process and personally delivered the specimen to the lab once it was safely retrieved.
Because of Nicole’s persistence, leadership, and refusal to give up on the situation, the specimen was successfully sent to the lab, and the patient was able to receive critical results. Nicole went far above and beyond her role, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, communication, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care. Her actions reflect the true spirit of the DAISY Award and the very best of nursing
