Nicole helped to coordinate her honor walk to the OR, and employees throughout the entire hospital, along with many, many of her loved ones, honored this young woman in her final hour.
I am an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with the Vascular & Interventional Neurology teams at North Florida Hospital in Gainesville, FL. As a CCRN, former DAISY Recipient and the Stroke Nurse Practitioner for this patient, it is my honor to nominate Critical Care RN Nicole for the DAISY Award.
Summer 2023 a young woman was admitted to the ICU after suffering a devastating stroke. She was transferred to our hospital for comprehensive neurologic care, but was unfortunately not a candidate for emergent intervention. Nicole accepted this patient to the ICU from the ER, and from admission through the final day of this young woman’s life, Nicole was her Nurse.
During her hospitalization, I witnessed Nicole care for this patient and her family. She provided exceptional care, exemplifying the true art of critical care nursing. She cared for her patient meticulously, and with such compassion. In addition to providing excellent nursing care for the patient, she cared for and comforted this patient’s family and loved ones. At times, the room was overflowing with people, from her parents, to her siblings, to her children, to her significant other and her friends. People were always present with her, and there was such immense emotion, love, and grief in such a tragic situation.
After 5 days, this young woman became an organ donor and donated the gift of life to many. In the end, Nicole covered additional shifts to provide continuity of care for her and her family. She helped to coordinate her honor walk to the OR, and employees throughout the entire hospital, along with many, many of her loved ones, honored this young woman in her final hour.
Nicole, in such a dark time, you provided exceptional nursing care and genuine compassion to this patient and her loved ones. Thank you for embodying the best of critical care nursing.
