I work for Mid-America Transplant. We had an infant organ donor at Mercy St. Louis in the NICU. She had been there for 12 days. Every nurse who took care of S was the very definition of compassion. They were obviously so sad that S couldn't be saved, but they worked tirelessly to care for her and her parents. Many hours were spent making sure Mom and Dad were OK, taking care of emotional and physical needs. There were many family dynamics which the staff handled with grace and humor. They honestly held this young couple together at their worst time. Amy McLean, the NICU Family Support manager, even came in on multiple days off. On S's last day, several nurses and Chaplain Louise came in on their day off to say good-bye and to support the parents.
All of the staff who took part in the care of S deserve to be recognized. They showed compassion, kindness, care, friendship, and love when S's parents needed it most. Thanks in large part to them, S was able to give the gift of life. They are amazing and I will forever be thankful for them!
