The entire nursing staff bonded together to show the infant love and compassion at the end of her life.
On Monday we had an infant who was to be extubated with all care withdrawn. During the day the family was emotionally distraught when they learned their baby would not survive. The dayshift team arranged a family baptism (Miho, Maria and Lauren). Following the baptism, the night shift took over and continued to go above and beyond for the baby and the family. The infant had two nurses assigned to her, Allison and Annette. The two of them carefully bathed the baby and dressed her nicely. Together with the charge nurse, they encouraged the parents to hold her and bond further before their goodbyes. The parents could not emotionally handle being present for the end of their baby’s life, so the entire nursing staff bonded together to show the infant love and compassion at the end of her life. Trisha held the baby after extubating until she passed. Stephen read aloud a poem. The team gathered for one final moment in honor of her life/death. Annette and Allison took pictures of the infant and created a memory box for the parents, which also included footprints. The whole team went above and beyond to step in for the family when they were not able and ensured this infant had a peaceful end to her life. As the RN for this infant during the day, I greatly appreciate the care and compassion they all showed.
