My husband arrived on 7 South after a spinal surgery and we left five days later. Many exemplary staff members cared for my husband, but there is one individual who merits special mention. Her name is Nicy Kurian. The care, her compassion, her quiet understanding was transformational. My husband was having horrific flares of spinal nerve pain. He was in terrible distress. Nicy somehow made a profound human connection, which to my husband, felt no less than life-saving. Words seem inadequate to explain the power of human kindness, extended so compassionately and authentically, by this unassuming RN. I am a nurse myself; I understand the dynamics of a busy and demanding shift. Yet Nicy, on multiple shifts, made herself available to directly meet her patient's emotional needs. Nicy was a quiet and very comforting presence. No platitudes. We will remember her tremendous compassion and professionalism.

Nicy is such a kind, understanding, and compassionate nurse. Her skillful care and quiet calmness were so comforting to me during my first days in the hospital when I was in great pain and uncertainty. Nicy's willingness to talk with me about my worries and concerns greatly helped me to come to terms with my diagnosis and treatment. Her cheerful optimism made me more eager to expend the energy needed to complete the physical and occupational therapy sessions. I feel that VMC is very fortunate to have such a wonderful nurse on its staff. Even though all of the quality of care I have received has been excellent, Nicy stands out as an extraordinary nurse!
