A patient called the office to reschedule an appointment, complaining of foot and arm pain. Niki spoke with the patient for several minutes and realized he was not his normal self. The patient’s speech was slurred, he stated he was confused and that he knows what he wants to say but he can’t. He said something was wrong with his head. The patient was home alone and stated someone would be by later to check on him. Niki knew something was not right, so she called the police to do a well-check. Niki remained on the phone until EMS arrived. As it turned out, patient was having a stroke. Had Niki not been the great nurse that she is, concerned and caring, knowing the signs; the turnout for this patient could have been completely different and very tragic. Niki is a phenomenal nurse and deserves so much more recognition. I am grateful to work with her and learn from her.
