I trusted Noah with the love of my life.
My husband was only 51 and very sick, almost died, and was airlifted to UMMC. He was on the vent, A-line, central line, and NG tube, and was on four pressers maxed out to keep his blood pressure up. His kidney and liver were failing. We have had so many teams, that it was hard to keep them all straight. We were in the ICU for several weeks and went through several rotations of nurses. Noah Sasser was his night nurse and we had him several times. There was always someone with him day and night.

Noah was excellent with my husband and so caring and gentle. He talked to him even if he was unconscious. He told us everything he was doing or about to do and why he was doing it. He kept everything neat, clean, and organized. Mike required a lot of care. He was having fluid drained from his body and several wounds that needed care. He was on Lactulose to make him have bowel movements. Noah was always so compassionate and caring. I asked him one night, "Noah, why did you want to become a nurse? Nowadays some people are in it for the wrong reason.” He told me that he had always wanted to help people and care for those who needed it. I said, "Don't you have nurse techs to help with cleaning and bathing?" He told me that in the ICU, the patients are so critical they have to have a nurse to do it. I said nurses would turn their noses up not to want to do "tech duties". Noah did everything from wiping my husband, to cleaning up BMs to bathing and he did it with compassion and pride. He took care of my husband like he was his family member. As a wife, it made me so proud to see someone who loved their job and took time and pride in helping my husband. We never left my husband, not even for one night. I trusted Noah with the love of my life. Noah not only cared for him, but he also cared for me and my whole family. Every time he would leave the room he asked if I was ok or needed a blanket or something to drink, was I comfortable. He treated us like we were just as important.

His empathy toward patients and their families was remarkable. That is not something that can be taught, that is who you are! I believe Noah went above and beyond his nursing skills. UMMC should be honored to have him on their team. Noah exemplifies what it is to be a wonderful nurse. He made an unbearable, horrible, terrifying, exhausting, emotional experience a little less because he went over and beyond!
