Noreen was nominated by a family member of a patient, who sent in the following heartfelt nomination (excerpts):
“My wife and I celebrated our 21st anniversary when shortly thereafter, she was hospitalized at UW Hospital. Needless to say, I was very frightened, but one person stood out in making a difference in getting my wife well – Super Nurse, Noreen.
Noreen identified my wife as a person, not just as a diagnosis, and was instrumental in my wife’s recovery. I am certain that the course of treatment that Noreen advocated for (which was ultimately followed), got us home sooner. It was obvious that Noreen has the respect of doctors and hospital staff.
When things took a turn for the worst, I was confident Noreen would come to my wife’s aid, and she did just that—skillfully and with command. She was the embodiment of Vince Lombardi’s quote, “When you get into the end zone, act like you’ve been there before.” Noreen was in a zone and throughout my wife’s care, explained every move and encouraged my wife to keep communicating. Fortunately, Noreen got things back on track and my wife was safe.
Being in a hospital as a patient or family member can be overwhelming. Noreen spoke in such a kind, friendly relaxed manner that we often found ourselves engaged in conversation and joking around. We almost forgot why we were there, which is rare in a hospital setting.
We were able to get back home because of Noreen’s excellent, top notch nursing care. We are so grateful that simply saying “thank you” was not enough. This nomination is not enough. We will never forget Noreen for providing remarkable care, clinical excellence and extraordinary compassion. She is a role model for nurses.”
