Cristina is a 4th semester nursing student who demonstrates exceptional patient care every single day at clinical. There was one patient who was really struggling with urinary retention. Cristina recognized the patient's symptoms, treated him and his wife with dignity and respect, and fiercely advocated for this patient. Cristina took action and completed all proactive measures to help this patient, spent time teaching him, and working through nursing interventions, including bladder scanning him. Cristina communicated perfectly with both myself and the nurse on the issue, and when met with resistance from the nurse, advocated in a way that was respectful and professional. She followed nursing protocol and the patient's wishes to ensure that the patient was catheterized. During the cath insertion, she again, went out of her way to protect the patient's dignity. Her diligence and fierce advocation for this patient led to improved outcomes for this patient and avoidance of additional problems from an overdistended bladder. This is only one example. Every patient that Cristina cares for raves about her attention to detail, not only nursing detail but HUMAN detail. She ensures that she meets the patient where they are at, provides whole-person care, and spends time explaining and communicating with the patient. This may mean sitting and listening to the patient's story during downtime, or coordinating care so that the patient has time to rest or give PRN medications when needed. Cristina will be a truly amazing nurse.
