Norma's patient stated that she was taking morphine for pain, but the morphine was causing headaches and making her feel nauseated and awful. She told Norma that she'd rather remain in pain than receive morphine. Norma told her that she can't stay in pain, and told her she will find another way to help relieve her pain. Norma did just that. She provided different medications and explained her plan of care regarding pain management and control. With this, the patient's pain decreased and was well controlled. The patient no longer received the morphine and was on her way to recovery without the side effects of morphine. Norma continued this plan of care with the patient and explained for the next oncoming shift the pain management plan of care, and to continue this for the patient. The nurses did, and the patient benefited greatly. The patient felt Norma was a true advocate and listened to her concerns and went out of her way to help her relieve her pain without having to take medication that made her feel sick. The patient expressed gratitude and appreciation for what Norma did, and sent all her thanks.
