Nurse Tammy Toney-Butler writes about her happy experience being able to facilitate a quick marriage in the ED:
The story begins kind of sadly, but has a very happy ending. How fortunate was I to get to be a part of this very special time in my patient's life. In April, 2015, he had a subdural bleed from an aneurysm and had a coil procedure and placement of a shunt. His recovery has been long and his significant other has been at his side. I just assumed they were married. Last night he came into the ED and was my patient. We later learned through testing that he was bleeding again in his brain, non-acute, but showing new bleeding since the last scan. The attending MD wanted the patient transferred to the Downtown NCH for an angiogram. The patient and wife, as I thought she was, hugged and were crying. The transfer was initiated to downtown and Ambitrans was on the way. Well, unknown by me at the time, these two wonderful people were supposed to be married on Thursday. The Patient's fiancée came out and asked for me to talk in private and said that they wanted to commence with the ceremony in 20 minutes in Room 120 and was it OK since she knew that Ambitrans was coming. I told her, of course, and that I would stall until the pastor and witnesses could arrive, and they were thrilled!
I went to Margaret, who was in charge and told her the story and that we needed to stall Ambitrans, Margaret smiled and said, "we need a card". I said, "we needed a cake". Margaret agreed to stall Ambitrans when they arrived and just happened to have a blank wedding card at the desk which she photocopied and we all signed. I ran to the cafeteria and saw Ambitrans on the way in. They were so gracious to stall since there were no calls pending. I ran and grabbed a cake from the cafeteria and the wedding commenced. The patient and his new wife were ecstatic! My patient then smiled his way to Downtown NCH despite his diagnosis and pain, unfortunate he could not have a bite of the cake, but his new wife teased him with it.
We are very fortunate to be a part of these snap shots of people's lives. All of us went to the room and congratulated them and making sure that they had all they needed. The ED crew were amazing in really helping me make this special time even more special for my patient. I am sure this was not protocol but had to be done.
