Carrie and Amy advocated for the patient by calling the hotel and DME company.
Carrie Cochrane-Hill and Amy Odegaard collaborated to go above and beyond for a patient who was discharged. Carrie discharged a COVID-positive patient who lived out of state. The patient had no resources, so he was to be discharged to a hotel with oxygen to recover and complete his quarantine. When the DME company was delivering the 02 to the hotel, he asked the patient why he was delivering there. The patient told him he was COVID positive. The delivery driver then refused to deliver the oxygen and told the hotel staff that the patient was positive. The hotel then refused to let him stay. This led to an altercation that involved the police department. The patient was now without a place to stay and without oxygen, so he called the 3 East. Carrie and Amy advocated for the patient by calling the hotel and DME company. They were successful in getting the patient a room after talking with several staff and jumping through time-consuming hoops. After extensive discussion with the medical equipment company, they agreed to deliver the oxygen the next morning. Amy maintained frequent communication with the patient to provide reassurance and education, so he knew what signs and symptoms to look for to trigger a call to 911. The patient remained stable throughout the night. These actions occurred after the hours of case management, social work, or any other resource that would typically address this. They operated without any formal direction, prevented a readmission, and repeatedly verified that the patient was stable. They advocated for the patient well past discharge. These actions demonstrate a commitment to Genesis' Mission, Vision, and Values.
