The 3K Medical Observation Unit at Levine Children’s Hospital is a unique and dynamic team dedicated to providing exceptional care to children with behavioral health needs. This team consists of a compassionate group of nurses, healthcare technicians, and psychiatric technicians who work seamlessly together to tackle the challenges that come with caring for this vulnerable patient population. As the demand for behavioral health services continues to grow, the LCH 3K team not only rises to the challenge but does so with unparalleled dedication, collaboration, and empathy.
The team’s success lies in their ability to work together, not only within their own unit but also in collaboration with various departments across the hospital. They regularly collaborate with security, social workers, therapists, and other clinical teams through unit-based committee meetings. These partnerships have led to significant improvements in patient care, many of which have been adopted across LCH. Notable advancements include the creation of the Behavioral Health menu, designed to promote healthy eating, the implementation of the patient snack cart, and the launch of the Behavioral Emergency Support Team (B.E.S.T.) to support medical units dealing with behavioral health crises. Additionally, the team developed an innovative incentive-based program called “Trials to Success” to encourage positive behavioral change, launched Behavioral Health Core Education, and implemented new safety protocols to protect both patients and staff.
A true highlight of the 3K team’s dedication to professional development is the achievement of several nurses becoming board-certified in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (PMH), a first for LCH. This accomplishment, achieved by several team members in just two years, underscores the team’s commitment to providing the highest level of care for their patients.
Despite facing increasing challenges, including escalating patient acuity and violence, the 3K team continues to exemplify compassion, empathy, and perseverance. The team’s bond with their patients goes beyond clinical care. They are seen sitting with a patient who may have been verbally abusive the day before, coloring together to build trust and provide emotional support. They engage with patients who may struggle with mental health issues by playing sports outside when they can’t even get out of bed. The team also goes above and beyond during the holidays, ensuring that patients who do not have family to visit receive a festive meal and companionship. This dedication to patient-centered care is a testament to the team’s unwavering advocacy for their patients’ well-being.
In response to the growing concern around workplace violence and safety, the 3K team has implemented several measures to protect both staff and patients. Safety checks are conducted daily, on every shift, for every patient to ensure that no items are present that could be used for self-harm or harm to others. In addition, the team works closely with the security team, with members stationed on the unit to manage escalating patient behaviors. This collaboration has significantly improved safety and created a more secure environment for both staff and patients.
Another innovative initiative created by the 3K team is the B.E.S.T. Team, a multidisciplinary group consisting of psychiatric technicians who conduct rounds on behavioral health patients throughout the hospital. This initiative helps bridge the gap between different units, preparing patients for their transition to 3K and easing their anxieties through consistent interactions and support. It also allows for room safety assessments and ensures that patients are aware of the expectations and rules of the hospital, particularly those related to the Behavioral Health Trails to Success Program.
The Behavioral Health Trails to Success Program, a core element of the 3K team’s behavioral management approach, is a shining example of the team’s innovative approach to patient care. The program is based on Collaborative Problem Solving, which empowers patients to take ownership of their behavior and work towards positive outcomes. By rewarding patients with tokens for exhibiting positive behaviors, they are encouraged to engage in meaningful activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, and social events like movie nights and bingo games. This not only motivates patients to achieve their personal goals but also fosters life skills development and enhances their overall hospital experience.
In conclusion, the Levine Children’s Hospital 3K team stands out as a remarkable example of compassion, collaboration, and innovation in the face of complex challenges. Their unwavering dedication to their patients, along with their commitment to safety and professional growth, makes them deserving of the DAISY Team Award. The 3K team exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond in providing exceptional care, and their work continues to set a high standard for behavioral health care in pediatric settings.
