On Sept. 20, 2016, a very tragic event took place in our community. After that event, protesting began, The protesting soon escalated into something no one could ever imagine. There were hundreds of people in the streets of Charlotte. Rioting started and Charlotte was on the national news. The rioting caused several streets to close and a major highway had to be closed.
Rioters set fires on I-85 pulling boxes off of tractor trailers. Businesses were broken into and some were even destroyed. This was the beginning of a long night. CMPD officers had to be available for anything that might happen. Some of these officers had been up since 6 am the previous day. They all had to stay focused and ready for anything that might happen. As the night progressed CHS University Emergency Department became a place where these officers could come and feel like they could relax and feel safe. CHS University Emergency Department became the hub for Platoon 1 and Squadron 3 (over 50 officers). These officers showed signs of physical and emotional exhaustion as they came through our doors. Every staff person would ask, "What can I do for you?" "How may I help?" The staff gathered food, drinks and anything else these officers needed. The Emergency Department staff pulled together that night.
That night the staff of the Emergency Department exemplified what CHS University stands for. They went above and beyond in caring for these officers. Words could not express the compassion they showed that night. I am proud to work with a team that made a difference.
