Without hesitation and with the utmost urgency, Octavia took it upon herself to relentlessly tell her doctor that pain medication had not been ordered.
I am pleased to nominate RN Octavia for their outstanding and relentless patient care of my 90-year-old mother-in-law's current hospital stay in the third-floor ward. My mom came in at 1 pm for what was supposed to be a one-hour outpatient procedure. The procedure had to be halted 2 hours into surgery, and an emergency surgery of her right punctured urethra had to be performed immediately. Mom ended up being sedated on the operating room table for over 6 hours and when she came out of surgery she had a 12 inch cut straight up and down her belly area.

From the moment she was transported and taken into the third ward, RNs Octavia and H, along with the team, were absolutely amazing. My wife and I spent the night, and everyone who performed any kind of medical work on Mom was very professional. She was checked on every hour, and we were very impressed with the dedication of the ward staff.

The following morning, my mother-in-law was in an 8 to 9 level of pain, and all she had been given, directed by the Urologist, was 0.1mg of Morphine. That was administered at 0500 am, just before shift change. It was now 0730, and shift change was just about done. I approached the ward's main desk and spoke with Octavia about the request for more pain medicine. Without hesitation and with the utmost urgency, Octavia took it upon herself to relentlessly tell her doctor that pain medication had not been ordered. I personally saw how professional and insistent Octavia was with Dr. M on the phone. So much that it prompted the doctor to prescribe Toradol which immediately was administered and my mom's pain level was reduced.

Shortly after that, Octavia returned to the room to check on my mom and asked if she needed anything. Mom was hungry, but the doctor had not directed on her chart meals or even chicken broth. There again, Octavia reengaged the doctor, and within minutes, a cup of broth was made and delivered to my mom. Octavia took the time to ensure my mother-in-law was seen immediately. All of this was being executed while the morning shift change was happening, and multiple patients on the ward were requiring attention. Wow, what a blessing to know that Piedmont has such great professionals who truly exhume how much they love what they do through actions and not just words. Thank you, Octavia, you have made a difference by your relentless efforts to make all the patients in the ward feel comfortable.
