Olenka went above and beyond treating the patient with compassion and dignity, creating a trusting relationship and making him feel safe.
Working in Behavioral Health comes with many challenges and my colleague Olenka Sandoval tackles these moments as learning opportunities to better care for her patients. Olenka was assigned to a patient who had a complicated history and care plan, categorized as a high risk for violence. She immediately created a plan of actions for the night. After the shift report, Olenka rounded, introducing herself to her patients, then prioritized the care for this particular patient. She met with the patient, assessing his mood and thoughts, briefed with the sitter explaining the patient’s condition and the importance of human interactions such as talking to the patient, taking him out of his room for short walks in the unit hallway, playing cards game, advising the MHA to encourage attendance in Wrap-up groups if patient can tolerate. All these interventions prevent the patient from feeling solitary. Early in the shift while the patient seemed calm, Olenka seized on this less stimulating time to provide an opportunity for the patient to attend to personal hygiene. She made sure to assess the patient throughout the shift and confer with colleagues to review her documentation to the treatment team to make sure she was on point. She provided PRN medication as needed to prevent escalation of the disturbing thoughts the patient was experiencing. Small acts, like accommodating showers in a less stimulating time, finding snacks, offering warm packs for the patient’s complaints of achy joints, frequent checks on the patient and making sure the sitter interacts with the patient made a tremendous impact in the patient’s improvement throughout the night. The most meaningful observation of the night was seeing the patient in a 1:1 interaction comfortably talking about himself and his dog at home, he told her proudly that he trained himself. Olenka went above and beyond treating the patient with compassion and dignity, creating a trusting relationship and making him feel safe. Her attitude is inspiring and correlates with the AHS Pride values. She has an incredible dedication to the patients and a great team player to her colleagues, always willing to help.
