Not only did she write them down, but wrote them in colorful numbers, which made me smile.
Nomination # 1: I was admitted from the ED department with a possible GI bleed, high blood pressure reading, and low HGB blood level. As patients, we are at the mercy of others and that experience can be either good or bad. I was a 67-year-old senior unaware that I was in the middle of a health crisis. When I arrived in my room, I sat on the bed quietly while the emotions and uncertainty sank in. The admission RN, Olivia Talken allowed me to go through it without saying a word. Her silence demonstrated respect for me despite other nursing duties she needed to do. I did not feel hurried which was much appreciated. My HGB level was being monitored regularly. I requested that she write my lab level results down for my personal records. She honored my request without hesitation and was creative with it. Not only did she write them down, but wrote them in colorful numbers, which made me smile. It was a bright light on a dim day. On Mother's Day, the morning before she left, I mentioned I would have my Granddaughter visiting me that day. Before going home, she brought in a recliner chair for my granddaughter to sit and relax during our visit. This was a generous act of kindness. Starting an IV line is a skill with the goal to stick a patient only once. She only stuck me once each time. She did it with precision and I was never uncomfortable. She was attentive noticing the IV tape was loose and bloody. After she changed it she was satisfied. Olivia is a professional nurse and a vessel for God. She is a Champion at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and a blessing to her patients. She is one a Hero in the Night. The kindness and display of concern for patients are in her demeanor.
Nomination # 2: Olivia is an impressive nurse. She is kind, courteous, compassionate, and totally efficient. She was informative and if she didn’t know the answer she would find out. If one has to be in the hospital, Olivia is the type of nurse you want caring for you or your loved one.
