Throughout, she remained calm and conversant with my mother, doing everything possible to alleviate her anxiety.
My 89-year-old mother fell in the kitchen and broke her hip. She was initially taken by ambulance to Dell Seton in downtown Austin, Texas, and was later transferred to Seton Main. The day following her surgery, she was moved from the 6th floor to Critical Care on the 4th floor. She was in pain, her blood pressure was fluctuating, and she was very confused as to what had happened and why she was hurting. Enter Olivia Moreno, RN… we could not have asked for a kinder, more compassionate, or skilled nurse to care for my mother. Olivia was attuned to my mother’s needs - both physical and emotional. When my mother needed new IV ports, Olivia used a range of innovative procedures to find a way to insert them. My mother’s vascular system has always made blood draws a challenge, and her veins with IV ports tended to collapse after a short time. Olivia utilized heat packs, a special light that illuminated all her veins to identify the best options to attempt replacement, butterfly needles, and other methodologies to make the procedures as painless as possible. Throughout, she remained calm and conversant with my mother, doing everything possible to alleviate her anxiety. My mother bonded with Olivia very quickly. Even when agitated, my mother would try to engage in conversation with Olivia, and sometimes, it was very difficult, if not impossible, to understand what she was wanting to communicate. Olivia would listen respectfully, and read my mother’s expressions, tone of voice, and body language to be able to interact with her appropriately, even if she couldn’t understand exactly what my mother was saying. She utilized a variety of responses – sometimes a sincere “I’m sorry,” or a compassionate “I understand,” sometimes a smile and a pat on her arm or a laugh. You could see her calming effect on my mother, and that was so comforting for all of us. When she would start to leave the room, Olivia never failed to ask my mother if there was anything else she could do for her at that moment, would explain she needed to check on her other patients, but that she would be back, and then would ask us if there was anything we needed. She had so many patients, but she exuded a sense of calm concern, never showing any signs of stress or impatience. She was always present in the moment and could not have been more compassionate in her care. My mother commented more than once that she felt Olivia treated her with “respect” and was “very nice and kind.” When my mother's physician would come in, Olivia was right there to answer questions, share observations, and carry out new orders. Yes, these are all a part of her job, but her level of competence and commitment was exemplary. She epitomized the knowledge, sensitivity, intuitiveness, and skill that are so critically important in the field of nursing. When Olivia called to tell me that my mother had stabilized and would be moved back up to the 6th floor, the news brought mixed emotions. Of course, we were thrilled that she was doing better, but we hated to say our goodbyes to Olivia. She provided a sense of calm and reassurance at a very stressful time since we knew that my mother was in such good hands. Seton has a rock star RN in Olivia Moreno, and her patients, and their families, are blessed to have such a gifted caregiver on their team to help them through their ordeal. We are deeply appreciative and grateful for the concern and capable nursing she provided to our family.
