Olivia advocates patients' wishes in difficult situations. Olivia fights for what is right for the unit and her patients. Everyone appreciates her.
G - Generous in sharing their knowledge:
Olivia is a well-rounded RN. She shares the skills she learned both here and at NYU Langone with staff. New RN grads off orientation are seen approaching her due to her knowledge and friendliness. She is seen going out of her way to obtain knowledge by becoming a unit super user of the zoll. Olivia is open to sharing knowledge with teammates at every point of the shift, both in and out of work. She picks up precepting and always helps educate others.

S - Supports the I-CARE values:
Olivia is one of the most compassionate nurses on MICU. She prioritizes patients before herself and sacrifices breaks to assist coworkers with their patients when they are tripled and/or become unstable. She is respectful of patients, families, and her coworkers. On many occasions, Olivia has taken one of my patients from me when I was tripled, and she had one patient. She even kept the patient with her initial assignment when she received an admission, making her tripled. And still delivered outstanding care to each of them. Olivia is empathetic and embodies all I-Care values in her practice, as reflected in her employee of the month award from MICU.

H - Helps the entire healthcare team:
Olivia responds to every Code 1000 I have witnessed while on shift with her. I saw first hand Olivia's critical thinking skills, ability to make suggestions and become a runner during a code to retrieve supplies and meds, and ability to communicate with staff.  Olivia is selfless and a true team player.

N - Nurtures novice nurses:
Olivia is seen helping new nurses at every chance she can. She guides them to solve problems instead of giving them the answers to stimulate critical thinking skills. Olivia has volunteered to precept on multiple occasions. She explains topics to them and provides study resources she received on orientation as she has also shared these resources with me. Olivia is optimistic and approachable and many nurses on the unit appreciate this.

U - Utilizes best practices:
Olivia utilizes best practices throughout her shifts at GSUH. During codes, I see her mentioning hospital protocols and following through with using them to ensure the patient receives the best care. She is attending courses to stay up to date on the best practice both inside and outside of GSUH. She shares this knowledge with the unit on multiple occasions as I have witnessed. She mentions her research and how she was recently published in major journals in cardiac and hiv studies. She shares her knowledge and practices from these studies with the entire unit and educators.

R - Respects patient, family, and coworkers:
Olivia is very respectful. She advocates patients' wishes in difficult situations. Olivia fights for what is right for the unit and her patients. Everyone appreciates her.

S - Serves as a role model for all staff:
As employee of the month in 2022, Olivia was recognized for her diligence in nursing. She always assists her staff. For example, we have had many nights without aides. Olivia performs bedside finger sticks and acts as an assist with baths when these nights occur. You truly can't tell if Olivia is having a bad night due to a rough assignment because she is always smiling and asking if she can help. She picks up patients and admits and assesses them from the ER for MICU nurses who are busy or on break. Many nurses have taken note of this. I've heard in passing how people note how kind and approachable Olivia is. We need more nurses like this. The ICU can be a very melancholy place that sometimes allows for negative events to occur. If more nurses like Olivia exist, many of these events can be turned positive.

E - Excellent clinical assessment skills:
Olivia has great clinical assessment skills. On many shifts I have worked with her she has found patients exhibiting stroke like symptoms, read EKGs and identified abnormal heart rhythms, noted patients with recent surgeries to be exsanguinating, and so on. She finds these issues and immediately brings it to the provider's attention. These situations could've ended with a different, unfortunate ending for patients and their families had Olivia not been the nurse assigned. She is vigilant and detail-oriented and this has truly saved countless lives on the unit.

Additional Information:
I firmly nominate Olivia for a DAISY Award. More nurses need her positive attitude and helpful actions. She leaves a lasting impact on everyone she works with. Bringing smiles to faces and ensuring a job well done even when we are having a rough night. If there is anyone that earned this award, it is Olivia. Between her hard work at GSUH and her extracurriculars, such as being a four time published co-author in hiv and cardiac, and her current presidency of a Sigma Theta Tau chapter, she is the golden standard of nursing. She deserves this award. She goes above and beyond, as stated and in the many unsited examples.
