This nurse spent most of Thursday in room X of the Gibbs Cancer Center Oncology Unit. She was monitoring the patient as she received her first chemotherapy infusion. The nurse thoroughly explained each step of the process to us. We were very pleased with her kind and professional bedside manner. She made sure we understood everything that was happening and never made us feel as if our questions were bothering her. We could tell she genuinely wanted us to understand all the details. As we talked, she began to realize there were many aspects of our family member’s diagnosis that had never been explained to us. She reviewed things that had already happened and clarified her case and treatment plan for us. She also shared important information to prepare us for what the next steps of our family member’s treatments would involve and confirmed she would be discharged that evening after her infusion was complete. We were concerned that it was too soon for her to leave the hospital. This nurse assured us we would be able to call for help if any concerns arose and provided us with 44 pages of information with the entire history of our family member’s case. She patiently went through each page with us and allowed us to learn about parts of her body that were being impacted by her cancer. We were relieved to hear those scans and treatments had already been done to start her care. We are so grateful to this nurse for helping us in so many ways. She is an excellent nurse in every way and could help other nurses learn how to help their patients and their families understand all aspects of patient care.
