My dad was sent to the ER from an LTAC after aspirating and needing to be intubated. He was immediately sent to the CICU. He had not been doing well for a couple of weeks. My wife (who is a nurse), my brother (who is a nurse practitioner) and I knew it was bad and that he probably wouldn't make it more than a few days. My other brother and my mom thought he'd be fine. We were discussing this with Olivia because we didn't know how to get them to understand that he probably wouldn't leave the hospital.
She had already been amazing not only with my dad but with my entire family. At that time she recommended that we speak with the care team. The next day we met with them and as hard as it was for my family, it helped everyone to realize what was coming. This let everyone spend more time and make sure he knew how much he meant to them. I have no idea how someone can work in an ICU. Having to work every shift helping not just patients, but the families that come with them must be heartbreaking.
Olivia showed over and over that she was there for all of us. She definitely was a skilled nurse when it came to caring for my dad. But it's what she did for my entire family while he was there made it easier for us to understand what was happening, which helped us spend the quality time with him that we needed. Her recommending the care team to us was the most important thing that helped my family make it through this tough time.
