Olivia saw her patient as a human in desperate need of help. A woman who didn't feel like she had a voice. She couldn't verbally communicate with this patient, but she didn't allow any of this to stop her.
We had a Hispanic female come into the ED via 911 yesterday. With the use of language services, I was able to triage her, and when I asked her if she felt safe at home and safe in her relationships, she began to cry. She stated she didn't feel safe in her relationships and reported that she didn't want to go home. Without going into too many details regarding this patient, we had the SANE nurse come to examine her (enough said). This patient was apprehensive about using the iPad to communicate and shut it off several times because she felt like she was being recorded. The SANE nurse suspected human trafficking and asked for a female in-person interpreter due to the nature of the situation. During her time in the ED, Olivia developed a rapport with the patient, making her feel safe. She and Olivia began to talk without the iPad, speaking English on her phone to translate into Spanish and vice versa. This went on until a female Hispanic translator arrived. Olivia went above and beyond for this patient as she does for many others. She comforted her and made her feel safe. She even looked up pictures of food, so the patient had a voice in what she wanted to order for dinner.

Olivia was a true advocate for her, and that is why I believe she is a DAISY Nurse. With the stigma of today's society of illegal immigrants coming into our country and everything we are bombarded with on television and social media, Olivia did not allow that to cloud her judgment or create bias. She saw her patient as a human in desperate need of help. A woman who didn't feel like she had a voice. She couldn't verbally communicate with this patient, but she didn't allow any of this to stop her. This patient received the best care anyone could have given to her. Olivia was her little guardian angel.
