Olivia Senn, RN
On this particular day, Olivia was assigned to the Family Birth Center to assist with a transition. During her shift, she cared for a mother delivering her third child.
The labor progressed rapidly, and the baby was born just moments before the father arrived. Following the birth, extenuating circumstances resulted in DHR intervening with the custody of this mother’s children.
The mother was left alone with a newborn (only minutes old) as well as a 10-month-old. She was given just two hours to arrange care for her infant child. Without immediate support, she was facing the very real possibility of temporary foster care placement for her 10-month-old child.
In the midst of this overwhelming situation, Olivia responded with exceptional compassion and advocacy for the mother.
Recognizing the emotional and practical challenges this mother was facing, Olivia stepped in to provide comfort and reassurance. Drawing from her own experience as a former NICU foster parent, Olivia went beyond her nursing role and offered to take the 10-month-old into her care temporarily.
Olivia’s actions truly reflect the heart and spirit of nursing. She extended her care far beyond clinical responsibilities by offering emotional support, advocacy, and a tangible solution during a critical moment.
Her response demonstrated a deep commitment to caring for patients and families beyond their medical needs - fostering meaningful human-to-human connections.
