One evening, Olivia had a patient that started actively GI bleeding. She intervened quickly and an MTP was called. In the midst of chaos in the room with the provider placing a central line and rapid transfusions happening, Olivia calmly stayed by the patient's bedside reassuring him through the line placement and transfusions. She asked if anyone had called his wife, and she took the initiative to notify her of the change in his condition. Olivia kept a close watch on his vital signs and kept talking to the patient and reassuring him. He continued to decline, and went into respiratory distress and decreased responsiveness. The provider came back in and asked the patient if he wanted to be intubated but he could not answer at that point. Olivia answered for him, as she had spoken with him when he was extubated that afternoon and she made sure to know his wishes. He shared with Olivia that he did not want to be reintubated, so she advocated for that at the most difficult moment. At the moment of his passing, his wife arrived at his room and confirmed her husband's wishes. His wife made it there just in time because of Olivia's phone call to her. Olivia meticulously helped to make the patient presentable for his wife after the turmoil his body went through in the hour before. His wife was so grateful to Olivia for her care, and I am honored that I got to witness it in action.
