My mom entered the hospital and spend the next 31 days there. The majority of the time spent on the same floor. During that long stay, Omar was a consistent bright spot for my mom and our family. He was nurturing and compassionate. I think he made a point to touch her hand or shoulder every time he entered the room, and always looked her in the eye to speak with her.
In caring for her, Omar had a quiet confidence that helped put her at ease. One incident that stands out with me is the day my mom got terrible news. Omar had come into the room and was busy taking care of what needed to be done. When my mom mentioned the news, he stopped what he was doing, pulled a chair close to her, leaned in and asked what she had learned and what the plan was. He listened intently as if they were the only two in the room. He assured her that he thought it sounded like an excellent plan and she seemed comforted by that. My mom unfortunately passed, but Omar was one of the people who helped her do that with dignity and grace.
