In the past few months, the Oncology team, both nurses and techs, have had very difficult, ethically charged patient situations and have handled them all with care and compassion that surpasses what is required. The Oncology team notices needs/wants and fills them with immense care.

Recently there was a code blue at shift change. This decompensating patient was found during bedside tech report and an RRT was activated. Both day and night nurses and techs jumped immediately into action. Unfortunately, this escalated to a code blue and the Oncology team worked well filling roles and comforting each other. After the code ended, the team’s one greatest concern was giving the patient dignity and care. All worked together to bathe her and make her last minutes dignifying. After the code, they supported each other and received feedback on how to improve next time. They did an amazing job and this is just one example of the everyday care given by the Oncology team. They go above and beyond every day and night for their patients. One will often see Oncology team members working hard to advocate for interventions for their decompensating patients. They work to even aid patients depressed from life altering diagnoses by writing them personal cards of encouragement, setting up areas for them to spend time with family and taking patients outside for fresh air. A testament to the kind of care the team gives is the recent amount of letters and emails sent to the floor thanking every person for the care provided to themselves or their loved ones. The Oncology team’s teamwork, care and concern for each other and patients, prompt notice of decompensation, and advocating for intervention all warrant The DAISY Team Award. What an amazing team to work with.
