Oneyda De La O, LVN
Oneyda has always provided stellar care to patients and support to other nurses on the team. She is a high performer who does her work every day in a spirit of excellence.
Recently, she took care of a patient being seen in the clinic. This patient has a history of having bed bugs, so the nursing staff was following standard IP precautions. One team member did see one bed bug crawling on this patient's body.
At the end of the visit, she noticed that this patient had lab orders. She went to the lab to ask the lab technician to go to the exam room to draw the patient's blood and wear the PPE. The lab technician didn't feel comfortable doing that and refused after being advised by his leadership not to draw that patient. It was a good call to ask him to go to the exam room to avoid an infestation in the lab and other areas of the clinic.
She also didn't want the patient going home with his care incomplete and drew that patient's blood herself, wearing PPE. She has never been afraid to take care of our patients, regardless of the circumstances.
I wish I could clone her two or three times! She is amazing, and completely embodies ICARE values. She displayed all of them: integrity, compassion, collaboration, accountability, respect, and equity with this patient example.
This patient faces unfortunate circumstances, but Oneyda demonstrates that he still deserves the best care and compassion. She helped us avoid unnecessary delays in providing care and facilitated his care in a way that brought him dignity and made him feel respected and loved. She sets an example for her peers and others in the practice.
