As long as I have known Opal, she has served pregnant and birthing families in almost every role on the unit. Opal manages and coordinates the program that cares for our families experiencing the loss of a pregnancy or newborn. She is one of many talented and caring nurses who care for these families. It is Opal's ongoing commitment to these families, a desire to do everything possible to meet the unique needs of these families, and a willingness to go above and beyond that sets her apart. Recently Opal helped me care for a family experiencing a miscarriage. Because Opal was willing to go above and beyond what is "usual" in a situation like this one, we were able to honor the family's requests and serve their unique needs in a way that made a real difference for them. This particular family didn't meet Opal during their loss, however, Opal's quiet, behind-the-scenes care and efforts helped support this family in its healing. Opal said yes. "Yes, I'll do my best" (even when the circumstances were sub-optimal for what the family was asking). Opal is an outstanding nurse and leader. She can always be counted on to do what is in the best interest of our patients and her team. Her skills, compassion, and care are second to none.
