In September 2016, many people came together in an emergency situation to save a patient's life in the Operating Room. Often, the individual's "behind the mask" go unrecognized as unsung heroes. In this case, the attending surgeon, Dr. Scott Armen, took the time to recognize the team. The team members who worked tirelessly are as follows:
Surgical Technicians: Josh Leslie, Jan Duke, Tom Booth, and Jessica Deangelo
Registered Nurses: Sovandara Prom, Janki Dhaduk, Cindy Thompson, and Courtney Stoe
Medical Student: Alexandra Adams
Surgery Resident: Ryan Juza
Anesthesia Attending: Meghan Whitley
Anesthesia Residents: Jacob Benrud and Eileen Micaroni-Smith
Trauma Surgeon: Scott Armen
Dr. Armen wrote, "The team did an absolutely amazing job. The patient in question was found to be in advanced hemorrhagic shock in the MICU after a colonoscopy with splenic avulsion. The OR crew on call went above and beyond to help prepare the room and the patient. Despite multiple other emergency cases, the staff came together to save the patient's life. Without this remarkable team effort, I have no doubt he would have died."
"I was inspired by what I witnessed. It was a genuine display of teamwork, and I am proud that I was fortunate enough to have been a part of it. This type of selflessness is what makes Penn State Hershey special."
